Humayun’s Tomb Heritage Walk
with Moby

The Humayun’s Tomb is situated in a neighbourhood of significant archaeological importance - the shrine of the 14th century Sufi Saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. The tomb is considered as the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent and is a World Heritage UNESCO Site where the second Mughal emperor, Humayun was laid to rest.

Humayun laid the foundations of Dinpanah, a new city on the bank of the river Yamuna. Unfortunately Humayun died in 1556, when he accidentally fell down the stairs of his library in the Purana Qila (Old Fort). Akbar, his eldest son, only thirteen years old at the time, then became the third Mughal emperor. Humayun’s wife, Bega Begum, popularly known as Haji Begum, built the Humayun’s Tomb in memory of her husband.

This complex has many Mughal monuments including Afsarwala tomb and mosque, Arab-Sarai built by Haji Begum, garden tomb of Bu Halima and the gateway to the tomb, tomb and Mosque of Isa Khan, the only Sur Period buildings which were built during the reign of Islam Shah, son of Sher Shah, in 1547-48 A.D. This grand Mughal garden-tomb is also called the ‘dormitory of the Mughals’ as it has graves of 150 Mughal family members. After exploring the tomb complex, you can enjoy a Mughlai meal at the famous Karim’s in adjoining Nizamuddin Basti.
